Leadership and Teamwork (II/1, II/2, III/1, III/2, III/6)

The aim of the course is to provide ship officers with the knowledge and skills that will facilitate the skillful leadership of people to perform work as part of a team:
• making effective decisions in various situations;
• leadership of (un) organized groups;
• fulfillment of duties to ensure the safety of navigation;
• formation of the level of competence of management activities on the ship, which allows to minimize the risk of accidents due to the preparedness of the crew for responsible and safe behavior in emergency situations.
The objectives of the course are to comprehensively prepare the officers of the ships:
• manage the crew and resources of the ship;
• to mastering skills that ensure the safety of navigation;
• operate in difficult conditions, including maintaining interaction with coastal services, rescue coordination centers in the event of emergency situations;
• analyze the principles, patterns of the management activities of an officer;
• influence the formation of interpersonal relations in the crews, preventing their negative impact on the performance of official duties.The content of the course is a logically consistent combination of theoretical and practical components. After completing the course, the candidates will be familiar with:
• duties of the team leader to ensure the safety of navigation;
• how management activities contribute to minimizing the risk of accidents;
• principles, purpose, tasks, functions, management methods for organizing joint work on the ship;
• functional duties, place on the ship of each crew member;
• standards of international maritime conventions and national legislation governing management activities on board.

Persons in command of ships will be able to:
• process information promptly;
• make informed decisions to maintain a work environment in critical situations;
• determine a strategy to ensure the safety of the vessel, crew members;
• lead (un) organized groups.Requirements for students: availability of an appropriate educational and qualification level, at least, a specialist who graduated from a higher maritime institution; a state of health that meets the requirements of the Maritime Administration of Ukraine.
